New plugin

Grafana, now in the Thinger.io Marketplace

A new plugin is now available in the Thinger.io Marketplace: the integration of Grafana, the data representation and analysis platform.

In case you don't know it, Grafana is an Open Source technology especially focused on the creation of dashboards for data sampling and representation. It can use different data sources, including time series databases such as Graphite, InfluxDB or OpenTSDB.

The Grafana project emerged in 2014 and has since built a large community of users who keep evolving its services and capabilities. Today it is one of the most used platforms in the field of IoT for this purpose, especially thanks to its ease of use and operation quality.

The integration

What Grafana adds to the platform

The new plugin lets our users expand the capabilities of the platform in many different directions.

New representation widgets

Create new representation widgets for the data of your devices.

Automatic alerts

Implement automatic alerts in a really simple and scalable way.

Data processing and filtering

Process and filter raw device data, to extract the useful information it contains.

All this in a really simple way: the integration gives access to Grafana through the Thinger.io web console, and the configuration is simplified by the integration of InfluxDB as the system for the devices' data buckets.

A Grafana dashboard inside the Thinger.io console, with stat panels, memory and CPU charts, login charts, server requests and page load times; the console menu lists Grafana under the installed plugins, next to The Things Network, Sigfox and Node-RED
Grafana opens inside the web console, listed with the other installed plugins.

All the information is available in the documentation of the plugin: see the Grafana plugin in the Marketplace.

Deployment

How to deploy this service

This plugin is one of the platform's premium features, only available to users of private instances of the Thinger.io server.

You can have one of these private instances yourself within minutes. Once it is created, deploying a Grafana service is quite simple thanks to the Thinger.io plugins system: it downloads, deploys and manages plugins from a control dashboard, with just a couple of buttons.

In July 2020 a private instance cost less than 27 €/month; current plans are on the pricing page.

Plugin Management: install, upgrade, start, stop or remove the plugin, and read its logs, from one dashboard.

What's next

More plugins, easier to manage

Thanks to this system, creating and managing plugins is really easy. We will continue to develop new plugins to extend the capabilities of Thinger.io in other directions, and to improve the management system, so that implementing custom solutions on top of the standard Thinger.io becomes easier and more scalable.

Grafana is still in the Marketplace today, opening from the console over device data alongside Prometheus and Alertmanager.
