New version

A new version of the platform, built for professional uses

We are happy to announce that the new version of the Thinger.io IoT platform has been released, and it comes with a lot of new features focused on professional uses.

During the last year we have been working on different improvements over our platform. The main objective: making it more extensible and more suitable for big infrastructure IoT projects, while keeping Thinger.io's agile orientation, which allows creating IoT projects in a simple way.

The next sections introduce the three improvement lines applied in this release, private cloud instances, multi-tenancy and plugins, and then the new IoT features of the web console.

Deployment

Private Thinger.io Cloud Instances, within minutes

A new Deployment Tool creates Private Thinger.io Cloud Instances within minutes.

Private instances are isolated cloud infrastructure without resource limits. From now on it is possible to connect unlimited devices, and to create unlimited buckets or endpoints in the same account. These instances can be deployed over AWS and Digital Ocean servers:

  • Unlimited devices, buckets and endpoints in the same account.
  • Deployed within minutes.
  • Fixed costs.
  • The server region closest to the device networks.

And thanks to the on-premise installation, it is possible to deploy over any other cloud provider or to create a local self-hosted infrastructure.

The Deployment Tool starts by selecting a cloud provider for the private instance.

As published in January 2020. The deployment site of that year is gone and capacities and plans have changed since: private instances are today on the Private Cloud page, and the current plans on the pricing page.

Multi-tenancy

One platform, many customers and brands

New administration features focused on multi-tenancy projects.

Users Management

Create and manage individual customer accounts.

Rebranding tool

Make multiple custom web consoles by setting logotypes, colors and web domains.

Users, domains and branding are today on the White Label / OEM page.

Plugins

A Plugin System to grow as fast as the market

Maybe the most significant improvement: it lets us extend Thinger.io features as fast as our market does.

We have implemented a Plugin System that deploys third-party software together with the platform. It lets us extend platform integrations faster, and gives users a way to customize their IoT instances with just the tools they need for their projects.

Some examples of plugins included in our marketplace: Node-RED, the Sigfox Cloud integration and The Things Network (TTN) devices integration.

Web console

New IoT features in the web console

Most of the changes focus on deployment and integration, but there was also time for new functionalities that simplify working with device data and make the web console more flexible.

File Storage System

Saves context data and non-IoT files.

Data aggregation

Real-time processed data for analysis or representations in widgets.

HTML customizable widget

A basis to implement custom widgets.

Improved HTTP devices

Integrate devices via REST API.

Device properties

Store configuration data for the IoT devices.

New device Dashboard

Simplifies configuration.

Documentation

Updated documentation, now on GitBook

Older users will notice that we have also updated the Thinger.io documentation. A GitBook migration has greatly simplified incorporating instructions on every change, which can be found as always in the documentation.

What's next

The roadmap for 2020

We have a really extensive roadmap for 2020.

We continue developing features that will help our large community of users create bigger and more complete IoT projects, with tools such as:

A project and product manager

Today, products and asset groups are part of fleet management.

The integration of the MQTT protocol

It arrived as the Thinger.io MQTT Broker.

An online software development tool for massive OTA programming

Over The Air programming for the connected devices: see OTA programming for IoT devices and the OTA updates of fleet management.
