Looking back

2018 highlights, and what we are up to in 2019

2018 was a great year for Thinger.io, and we wanted to take a moment to look back at what we accomplished and let you know what to expect from us in the upcoming year.

Published in January 2019: the plans for 2019 below describe what the team was preparing at the time.

The numbers

A year in three figures

To give you some numbers that we are really proud of:

25k
developers created a Thinger.io account, from all over the world
500+
active self-hosted instances deployed all over the world
100M+
datapoints retrieved

Not bad, community!

Milestones

From the Startup School to Web Summit

Besides all of this, 2018 took the team to new places, new partners and new stages.

May: Tetuan Valley Startup School

We finished the Tetuan Valley Startup School and became part of the Tetuan Valley Community.

August: Google for Startups Campus Madrid

We moved our office to the Google for Startups Campus in Madrid.

September: Vodafone IoT Future Hub

Thanks to the Vodafone IoT Future Hub, we had the opportunity to collaborate with a lot of companies from the IoT environment in Europe, and we received the 2nd prize among 600 IoT startups.

November: Alpha Startup at Web Summit

We were selected as Alpha Startup at Web Summit in Lisbon and had the chance to hold a booth during those days.

December: new tools for 2019

We started developing the new tools for 2019 described below.

At Web Summit we were able to meet a lot of developers who were already using the Thinger.io platform, and we made great contacts with other companies interested in our product. The story since then is on the company timeline.

What we learned

New features from the needs of IoT developers

But most important is that during 2018 we learned a lot about the needs of IoT developers.

That is why, for the last couple of months, we have been working on new features that will allow you to create better products in an easier way. These tools include:

Device properties

The possibility of adding properties to the devices.

Project management

A project management tool to handle multiple projects from the same Thinger.io account.

New hardware

A ready-to-go device with over-the-air tools

Last but not least, we are going to start selling a new hardware device, with WiFi and Bluetooth communication.

The device will be ready to go and able to connect to Thinger.io just by introducing your WiFi credentials. The most interesting part is that it will come with Over the Air (OTA) tools: flashing capabilities over the Internet, online firmware management and firmware updates at scale with a few clicks from our web console.

It will also include an extra layer of security, with encrypted flash and secure boot.

Over-the-air updates are part of the platform today: see OTA in Fleet Management.

What's next

Looking ahead to 2019

These were just a few highlights of 2018, and we can't wait to see what 2019 will bring us.

We have a lot planned for the next months, and we wanted to let you know what we are up to!
